Week of October 18–24
Around the workshop
- Wonder of the Word Hub – I reworked a couple of layouts with the Hub and the Wonder of the Word Kids Hub page. I also updated translations for the Hub page in other languages.
- I started working on adding a background color to the footer for the light scheme. The color will be our primary Heritage Blue color. I had to update all the other colors in the footer to use white. I also fixed a couple of focus styles and added some focus styles to one of the buttons that did not have one. The next step is to test the changes in the other language sites to make sure the change works across the board.
- I worked on a lot of smaller tasks this week both for the Wonder of the Word and other areas of the sites. We announced two more speakers for the True Woman ’27 conference and announced the worship leaders so I added that content to the site. I have been working on a couple other secondary pages that we are going to add to the site this coming week.
- I took a sick day on Wednesday for both physical and mental health. I had trouble sleeping on multiple nights and it caught up with me on Wednesday morning. I am glad that I took a break to get some extra rest. Unfortunately, I had trouble getting to sleep on Wednesday night. But I am glad that the extra rest on Wednesday helped me to not be as tired on Thursday. I have a lot of good things on my mind and have had trouble turning off the brain at night.
World Series
I was excited about the World Series after the Rays won on Monday night and punched their ticket to play in the Fall Classic. It is great to see the two best teams in baseball square off. And they are both smaller market teams with low payroll. This is the second time I have watched the Rays play in a World Series as a fan. I was disappointed to watch them lose the first two games of the series. I thought for sure that they were going to even it up on Saturday after a hot start in the first inning. I am hoping that playing in Tampa will ignite the team and that they can comeback and make it an exciting series.
I was bummed to look in my closet on Monday night and realize that I no longer own a Rays shirt. I started looking on Fanatics on Tuesday. Standard shipping would not get the shirt to me until the middle of next week and I did not want to pay to have it expedited. I ended up seeing an ad for the same shirt at Kohl’s (I think it was still fulfilled by Fanatics). It was about $5 cheaper and we could use $10 in Kohl’s cash that my wife had. What I didn’t know is that it shipped out of Atlanta and it arrived the next day (Friday) just in time for me to wear while I cheered on my Rays over the weekend.
PHP vulnerability
The big story of the week was the disclosure of a serious PHP vulnerability on Wednesday. The PHP team was aware of the issue and was working on implementing a patch on Thursday. But Hacker News broke the story early (someone should be accountable for that) and it forced the PHP team to speed up the process and get a fix out sooner. Kevin Powell did a great job of explaining what happened last week. I also read an article with the volunteer that was working on the fix.
The sites I work on for Revive Our Hearts use Django CMS and Python so we were not affected by the vulnerability. The agency I freelance was affected because their sites are running WordPress. I checked with the hosting provider and they already had security in place and were working on getting the patches in place. I also use WordPress for this site so I checked with my hosting provider and they were on top of it as well.
What I wrote
- Október 23 (70 years later) – Friday was observed in Hungary as Republic Day. This year’s observance also was the 70th Anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution. I am rereading James Michener’s book, The Bridge at Andau, to observe this occasion.
- Why I am rooting for the Rays – In the excitement of the World Series, I decided to write about why I am a Rays fan. In the midst of writing, something dawned on me that I had not necessarily thought about before. And that insight answered the statement and gave me fresh appreciation.

And from the responses he has gotten, there is still a lot of developers out there who care and appreciate Kevin’s efforts.

What I played

MLB The Show 23 (Orioles) – I went 3-1 this week playing in the World Series against the Dodgers. The first four games of the series were 2 run games (4-2, 4-2, 4-2, 10-8). I came out on the winning side of half of those. I went on to win Game 5 (7-6) and gain the advantage as the series goes back to Baltimore.
