Week of August 30–September 5

Front End Study Hall

I attended Front End Study Hall this week. I participated more in the discussion this week. Joe kicked us off talking about HTML email and he mentioned MJML. I mentioned that MJML delivered on its promise to “make responsive email easy.” I started using it six years ago and instantly hated doing HTML less. We use it right inside a Django template at Revive Our Hearts and I have been working on a template for the daily email that will go out starting next year for the Study Through the Bible portion of Wonder of the Word.

I also chimed in about several of the tools I use for accessibility testing in the browser–AXE Dev tools, Lighthouse, and WAVE extension by WebAIM.

I also enjoyed the discussion about using print stylesheets for zines. James showed us a zine he has been working on and several others chimed in.

Revive Our Hearts 25th Anniversary

Revive Our Hearts celebrated its 25th anniversary on Thursday. We had a special chapel service to celebrate. We heard stories and testimonies. Nancy played Great is Thy Faithfulness on the piano and later addressed the staff. It was a great time of celebrating what God has done as well as be challenged to continue to trust Him for the future.

Much of my work over the past few weeks has been on a 25th Anniversary landing page, which launched earlier in the week. I have also been working on the digital version of our Fall newsletter which focuses on the 25th anniversary celebration. That project will launch later this next week.

Around the workshop

  • I put the finishing touches on the 25th Anniversary landing page and worked on several edits for the Fall newsletter which will publish later this next week.
  • I continued working on templates for the Study through the Bible portion of Wonder of the Word.
  • At the Thursday chapel, the communication team unveiled the new Revive Our Hearts logo, which we will start rolling out next month. I spent the afternoon on Friday starting to play with an implementation of it on the website. We will also be introducing an updated color palette. I will be working on implementing that on the site in September as well as updating our 6 other language sites.

Roadtrip

My wife and I hit the road on Saturday to visit our daughter in Johnson City. The main purpose of the trip was to pick up her car and bring it back to Chattanooga. We are going to try to get the windshield replaced this week. I mentioned that we had several challenges when we tried to replace it right before we moved her to school and when trying to get it replaced in Johnson City.

It was good to see our daughter and give her plenty of hugs. We have missed her and it was nice to spend time with her on Saturday afternoon. We went out for a late lunch and did some grocery shopping. We also helped her with a few things in her dorm room. We got together with her on Sunday for breakfast and then hit the road back to Chattanooga. The plan is to get the windshield replaced on Tuesday and then take the car back to her next weekend.

Scott Riley’s site – I like the pixelated desktop theme to Scott’s site. Much like other sites, you can move windows around and open and close them. Several items animate on the page like the “Scott is …”

What I watched

Budapest Lights Music Video – I love Budapest and one of my favorite things to do when I visit the city is to see the lights on the landmarks along the Danube. I enjoyed all the footage of just that in this video.

What I played

  • MLB The Show 23 (Orioles) – I went 2-2 this week. I lost a couple to the Angels and won the first game of a new series against the Red Sox.
