How do we translate that unity and commitment to our region into action? Let’s first acknowledge our starting point: The Capital Region from Baltimore, MD to Richmond, VA is an economic powerhouse. We are the 3rd largest regional economy in the United States and 7th largest in the world. Our diversity and history have resulted in a region with unparalleled strengths; highly talented and educated people, world-class universities and federal research facilities, global transportation gateways, 55 of the Fortune 1000 companies, and of course the seat of the U.S. federal government.
Reaching our potential begins by redefining many of the big issues impacting our economic prosperity as a superregional challenge, not a local one, with regional solutions, for three reasons:
How does this new organization, the Greater Washington Partnership, fit in? The Partnership is a first-of-its-kind civic alliance drawing from the leading employers and entrepreneurs—that together employ more than 200,000 people in the Capital Region. We are committed to being part of the solution to making this region one of the world’s best places to live, work, and build a business. We will leverage our leaders and their organizations’ capabilities, resources, and influence in service of the public interest.
Over the next 20 years, the Capital Region is projected to add 2.4 million residents which will increase pressure on an already burdened system
More than 50 of America’s largest companies are headquartered in the Capital Region, powering the economy for workers in the region and beyond.
GWP’s members represent businesses employing more than 250,000 people in the Capital Region.
Of the Capital Region’s 10.2 million residents, nearly 50% of those who commute cross county borders and 20% cross state lines daily to access their jobs.
Nearly half of the population, 46 percent, or 3.3 million, in the greater Capital Region 25 years and older hold a Bachelor’s degree or higher.
By 2025, we anticipate a supply gap of 49% for digital tech talent jobs. Despite a deep digital tech workforce, the gap in our region is larger than peer regions’ and the U.S. average.
