Weeknotes 25:27

Week of June 29–July 5

I got back to work after a two week hiatus. But it was a short week. I had taken off Monday as part of my bereavement leave. And Friday was a holiday. We traveled back from Louisiana on Sunday. Monday was mostly a relax and recover day.

I got back into the “office” on Tuesday. Grief hit me hard in the afternoon. I have never had someone that I live with die before. I walk by her empty room a lot during the day so the loss is felt a lot more than other times I have grieved. I also had a challenging day with my freelance work. I was frustrated by not being able to download some sites in Kinsta and work with them locally. I made due with SFTP. I am glad that the one site I had to update had a staging server so that I could work on it and make local changes and upload the files to check my work. And I had another project where I could not figure out where the sidebar links were coming from. Someone at the agency was finally able to figure it out.

I was happy to get set up with Photoshop. I had using my personal license for Affinity Photo. But I had a need to be able to edit the design files which were in Photoshop so I decided it was time to bite the bullet and ask for a license.

I enjoyed reading in several different books, playing video games, watching Ironheart and a video about restoration work at Casa Batlló on Friday. I also took a nap. A nice chill day.

Django and Sass

I spent a little bit of time investigating a problem I have run up against in Django CMS. It happened when I used some CSS math functions. I was getting error messages from the CMS. I was trying to use a mixture of percentage and pixels values and Sass was trying to evaluate it as a Math function and the units were incompatible. I was using the min function in a grid-template-columns declararation: grid-template-columns: repeat(auto-fill, minmax(min(200px, 100%), 1fr));. I needed to be able to escape and not have Sass try to evaluate the code as a math function.

Here was my final solution: grid-template-columns: repeat(auto-fill, minmax(unquote("min(200px, 100%)"), 1fr));

I am glad that I took the time to research this a bit. It came it handy earlier this week when I wanted to define a maximum padding for a section.

Articles I read

What I watched

Stray Kids Hollow / The First Take

Gaudí’s Hidden Garden: Revealing the Original Look of 1906 (YouTube) – I enjoyed this look into the restoration of the back facade and gardens of Casa Batlló. They were renovating it when I visited in April 2024. I would love to go back and see this area restored.

  • KPop Demon Hunters (Netflix) – My daughter chose this to watch as a family. Much better than I expected.
  • NCIS (Netflix)
  • Ironheart (Disney+) – I watched the first two episodes. Interested enough that I plan to keep watching.
  • UEFA Women’s European Championship – I watched a little bit of the Wales-Netherlands game and the end of the France-England games on Saturday

Books I am reading

  • Everyday Gospel (Paul David Tripp) – Reading through the Bible this year with this devotional.
  • Universal Principles of UX Design (Irene Pereyra) – I have not read it in a couple of weeks.
  • The Basketball 100 (David Aldridge & John Hollinger)
  • On Tyranny (Timothy Synder)
  • All That Jesus Commanded (John Piper) – I started this on Saturday.
  • Five Mere Christians (Jordan Raynor) – I read through 2 of the biographies in this one. I really enjoyed reading about Ole Kirk Christiansen, the founder of LEGO.
  • Keep Going (Austin Kleon) – I just started reading this one while hanging out in my son’s room (I bought it for him several years ago).

What I listened to

Revive Our Hearts podcast – Preparing for Brokenness and What is True Brokenness? The podcast is remembering a life-changing message that Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth gave 30 years ago at a Campus Crusade for Christ staff conference. I attended that conference and that message has had a significant impact on my life. I enjoyed getting to revisit this and think about the personal impact it has had on my Christian walk.

What I played

  • MLB The Show 20 (Twins) – I went 5-1 and snapped a 9 game winning streak.
  • NBA2K25 (Nuggets) – I won all three games that I played. I am enjoying getting back into the game after spending more time playing MLB The Show.
