Weeknotes 25:25

Week of June 15–21
My mother-in-law, who has lived with us and we have cared for the past 6 years, had a major stroke on Tuesday morning. My wife was with her when it happened and we quickly called 9-1-1. Because we acted quickly, we gave her the best chance we could to survive. But despite our best efforts, it became clear at the end of the week that the stroke did too much damage. Late on Friday, we pivoted from trying to help her recover to making her comfortable for her last days, which we are expecting to be sometime in the next week.
We are grateful that we got a golden moment on Friday. We had brought our kids to the hospital to say their goodbyes. She had about an hour of consciousness. She understood what we were saying and was able to say short things to communicate. It was a special moment for our kids and for us. We have no regrets and nothing left unsaid.
My faith gave me a great deal of comfort as we walked through the week. We experienced peace as we shifted direction in order to follow my mother-in-law’s wishes. We are so grateful for the fact that she made all of that very clear ahead of time. We are also grateful for the many people who have supported us in big and small ways over the past week.
- I took a roadtrip with my son on Sunday. We gave his friend a ride to the bus station in Nashville so that she could travel to her next destination. After dropping her off, we met up with my daughter and spent some time with her before traveling back to Chattanooga. It was nice to see my oldest for Father’s Day.
- I worked on a variety of tasks on Monday. I also watched Ahmad Shadeed’s talk from CSS Day. I share more thoughts on that below.
- I had several meetings on Tuesday morning and was in the middle of one when my wife called me for help.
Articles I read
- A knockout blow for LLMs? (Geoff Graham)
- Accessible Rickrolling (Heydon Pickering)
- The ‘Quiet Revival’ in the UK (The Wee Flea)
- Becoming an Asshole (Jim Nielsen)
- Glassy UIs, CSS Battles, and more (Kevin Powell newsletter) – My Bluesky post about how to make a figure with a figcaption match the width of the image even if the text is long was mentioned in his links from around the Web.
- Well Dressing (Jon Hicks) – I enjoy these type of posts.
- That was UX London 2025 (Jeremy Keith)
- You’re not a front-end developer until you’ve… (Nic Chan) – I loved this list/quiz of things Nic has observed in his ten year career. I laughed and head nodded strongly with “Refreshed prod while working on local and wondered why your changes weren’t showing.” I have done that way too many times and gotten frustrated before figuring it out.
- War, Actual War is Back. Are We Ready? (Stephen McAlpine) – This makes me very uncomfortable to think about. I remember reading about WWI several years ago and realizing that a lot of the things that were true before that war are true or similar today.
- ARIA/HTML relationship Severance (HTML Accessibility)
- Pride, shame, and accessibility (Heydon Pickering)
- Master Your Moments and Master Your Days (Tim Challies)
- A new way to style gaps in CSS (Chrome for Developers) – I enjoyed playing around with this in the playground mentioned in the article. I am excited to see this feature added.
- You Can’t Pay Me To Prompt! (Dave Bushell) – I want to write my own AI policy soon.
- The Chicago Look (Field Notes) – I enjoyed learning a little bit about sign making. I am interested in this edition of Field Notes and inspired by the story behind it.
- Spells Old and New For a Post-Secular Age (Stephen McAlpine)
- The Quiet Griever and the Comfort of God (Faithful Paradox)
- How to Keep Up With New CSS Features (Sasha Greif, CSS Tricks) – I would like to write my own thoughts of how I have kept up. It includes a lot of what Sasha mentioned but also some other sources.
- The hero of my own story (Brian DeConinck)
- Unbreaking. (Ethan Marcotte) – I enjoyed catching up with Ethan’s involvement in this important project.
- Implementing light-dark() (Trys Mudford) – This is a great introduction to using color-scheme.
- Creating CSS Theme Variables from a JS file (Michelle Barker)
- The <select> element can now be customized with CSS (Adam Argyle, Chrome for Developers)
- Our Online Homes Need Infastructure (Jay Hoffman, The History of the Web)
- Grid First, Flex Third (Alex Riviere) – An interesting approach.
- Item Flow – Part 1: A new unified concept for layout (Jen Simmons, Webkit Blog) – This is from March but glad I finally read it because I have heard a bit about it from other sources.
- On War with Iran and Desiring the Political Good (Alan Noble)
- When Prayer Starts With Panic (Phil Allen)
- The Height Enigma (Josh Comeau) – Great explanation of one of the things that makes CSS weird.
- A Word on Diligence (Blake Long)
- Fifty One (Jonathan Snook)
- Why Silicon Valley CTOs Are Secretly Moving Away from React (Freedium)
- I Feel Like I’m Taking Crazy Pills (Brad Littlejohn)
- Churchiness Is Back (Trevin Wax, The Gospel Coalition)
- Studio Notes #37 (Dan Cedarholm)
What I watched

I watched Ahmad Shadeed’s Smart Layouts talk from CSS Day. I appreciate how he is trying to stretch the use of CSS to its full potential. I have seen him do this through his interactive tutorials on his site. I love that he is challenging us to a more intrinsic approach and not letting the tools (Figma) limit us. I do think his approach is very similar to Jen Simmons idea of intrinsic layouts. I am not quite sure why that has not caught on more.
Signs of the Times (Vimeo) – I loved watching and learning about the Chicago style of sign design. This was part of the Field Notes article I mentioned above. Very inspiring.
- Wild Robot (Netflix) – I loved it.
- Howl’s Moving Castle (DVD) – I was not keen on watching this because I am not necessarily a big fan of Studio Ghibli. But I was wrong and really enjoyed it.
- Game 5 of NBA Finals (ABC)
- Game 6 of NBA Finals (ABC) – Our family is rooting for the Pacers and enjoyed seeing them push a game 7.
- NCIS (Netflix)
Books I am reading
- Sunday Matters (Paul David Tripp) – I read one devotional a week.
- Everyday Gospel (Paul David Tripp) – Reading through the Bible this year with this devotional.
- Universal Principles of UX Design (Irene Pereyra) – I have not read it in a couple of weeks.
- The Basketball 100 (David Aldridge & John Hollinger)
- Ruthless Trust (Brennan Manning) – I started rereading this one on Sunday.
- On Tyranny (Timothy Synder)
- All That Jesus Commanded (John Piper) – I started this on Saturday.
What I listened to
CSS features I wished we had right now (Kevin Powell) – I listened to this 30 minutes episode while walking on Monday night.

- Saturday – 4.7 in 1 hour 26 minutes
What I played
