Week of April 27–May3

Articles I wrote

  • CSS Trick: Handling logos in dark mode – Last week, I had to solve multiple issues with images not having enough contrast in dark mode or light mode. Some were more straightforward to solve than others. I had to experiment with to find different solutions using the filter property.
  • Inspired by Andy – I appreciate how Andy Clarke thinks outside the box and is always looking for “expressive” solutions. I love his latest article on CSS Tricks. It reminded me of reading Transcending CSS or Hardboiled Web Design and the inspiration both of those gave me.

Roadtrip

I traveled up to Murray, Kentucky on Saturday to help my son pack up his dorm room as he prepares to finish school this coming week and live at home for the summer. The previous years, I have traveled up for a few days while he finishes finals. We would load up the van and then clean his room before checking out and staying in a hotel before making the trip back to Chattanooga the next day. But this year, I decided to go up the weekend before to get the bulk of his stuff and he will pack the rest of it in his car when he comes home.

I had to drive through a lot of heavy rain on the trip up to Murray. It was particularly bad as I was driving through Nashville. I was glad when the rain finally let up when I got into Kentucky. I stopped at Culver’s in Murray to grab a late lunch before heading over to my son’s dorm to help him pack up. I enjoyed going out to dinner with him and his girlfriend on Saturday night. We also took a break to watch the Nuggets beat the Clippers to advance to the next round of the NBA playoffs. My son’s friend joined us and I enjoyed getting hang out with the two of them.

Culver’s is one of my favorite places to eat. We do not have one in Chattanooga so I always try to visit the one in Murray when I am in town. I love their mushroom and Swiss butter burger. The rain hit Murray just as I got inside so I watched it pour while I ate. It cleared up by the time I was ready to drive over to my son’s dorm.

State of Devs 2025 survey

I took a survey this week from the folks that do the The State of CSS and other “State of …” surveys. This survey was focused on us, the people behind the work. The questions were about interests, health, work preferences, musical likes, and some unpleasant subjects such as workplace issues and discrimination. I will be interested to see the results when they publish them in a couple of months. Go take the survey today.
