Pictures I Would Take if I Had a Camera

June 6, 2006

Here is a list of pictures I would take if I had a camera right now while visiting Tulsa

  • McDonald’s sign at 91st and Memorial – it has a nostalgic look to it with “Hamburger” character (the head is a bun and it has arms and legs)
  • Patriotic Penguin on Parade near 61st and Memorial
  • “Recess” statue at Hardesty Regional Library – this statue of a boy reading a magazine and sipping on a Coke was in front of the old location of the library.  I frequented that library a lot to have quiet times because they had private study rooms.  The new library has a statue of several books stacked up that is taller than me.
  • Bridges on Highway 66 between Tulsa and Claremore – I felt nostalgic traveling on “Route 66” last Friday.  There are two old bridges that I would love to take a picture of.
  • Tulsa Driller at the Fairgrounds – this larger than life figure is one of the symbols of Tulsa

I Don’t Like Slow Internet

June 6, 2006

I have been traveling for the past two weeks in Arkansas and Oklahoma.  When I got to Arkansas, I was using dial-up to connect to the Internet from my mother-in-law’s house.  I knew that it was going to be a little irratating because I have gotten use to using broadband at home and having a high speed connection at work.  What I didn’t realize is how irratating.  From her house, I can only get a 26 connection.  AHHHHH!!!

I was very happy to get to Tulsa and get on the Net at Panera’s.  But the best was yet to come.  I visited a local library and they have high speed wireless Internet :)  I figured they would have it but only for patrons.  I believe my library in Orlando has wireless but you have to sign up for an account.  Maybe that has changed too.  All this to say, it was really nice to get back to high speed the last couple of days.  Tomorrow I leave to go back to Little Rock and the really slow connection.  One more reason to look forward to coming home next week.

NOOMA

June 6, 2006

One of my ministry partners here in Tulsa introduced me to NOOMA, short films that teach spiritual messages. I thought they were really well done. Pastor Rob Bell shares spiritual insights through these short films. But a lot of the message is in what is going on around him in the background of the film. I can see these being powerful with this generation.

I watched a couple one night and that is all I could handle. There is a lot to think about. Rob brings out the background of certain passages and makes the Word of God come alive. I have a friend that would like to do something similar using Campus Crusade for Christ’s Transferable Concepts.

I am staying with this family while her. They are very neat people and very generous. The wife went out and bought me all the NOOMA videos and a couple other books including Velvet Elvis by Rob Bell. I am looking forward to reading that one.

Penguins on Parade

June 6, 2006

This week, I am in Tulsa, Oklahoma. I am in the area visiting with people who support our ministry with Campus Crusade for Christ. It has been great to see people again and I have enjoyed being back in Tulsa. My wife and I lived here for 1 1/2 years when we first got married.

As I have been driving around, I wish I had my digital camera. The other day, I started noticing penguins everywhere. They were all painted something different. I have seen several other cities do something similar including Lawrence, Kansas where I went to college. In Lawrence, they have Jayhawks on Parade. In Tulsa, it is penguins.

Sure enough, someone had a picture of one of the penguins on Flickr. I did not see this particular one. One that I saw that I really liked was a patriotic penguin of red, white and blue.
